  • » Spa in Hungary

Hungary is blessed with more than two thousand natural thermalwater mineral springs. The heat and chemical composition of these thermalwaters have a direct healing effect on many mobility conditions such as arthritis and rheumatism. Budapest is rightly called «spa capital of Europe» because of its over 100 thermalwater springs, its world famous baths and its long traditions for spa. Spa is based on the use of thermalwater and mudpackings, and this is a seperate field of medicine called balneotherapy. The treatment is very pleasant and is therefore part of both our wellness and therapeutic programs at the our hotel, Danubius Spa and Health Resort Margitsziget. Balneotherapy is combined with other types of physiotherapy when it is used for treating medical conditions.

    Spa history

It is assumed that the Hungarian capital Budapest was established where it is due to the access of water from the river Danube and because of the many thermal springs in the area. In general there are many such thermal springs throughout Hungary, and only in Budapest there are more than 100 of them. Several of these are included in spas, which are sites offering thermalwater for wellness and for treatment with physiotherapy. The thermal springs have been used for their beneficial effect on health since roman times, when this area was a part of the roman empire called Pannonia. The first bath hospital was built in Buda in the 11th century by the knights of St. John. Later, during the Turkish occupation of Hungary in the 15th and 16th century, most of the city was destroyed, but the baths where kept and several new where built in Turkish style. The Turskish baths Rác, Rudas, Császár and Király are still used today. Several large spas where built during the 17th and 18th century, of which the village Héviz, with the worlds largest thermal lake, is the most remarkable. The two world famous baths in Budapest, the Gellert bath (in art noveau style) and the Széchényi bath (in Baroque style) where built in 1891 and the latter in 1918. Hungary, and especially Budapest have during the last century become maybe the largest center for spa in Europe.

The masseur uses palms, fingers, thumbs, knuckles, elbows, knees and feet onto the body’s acupunture points along what are considered the body’s meridians or energy channels. In Shiatsu it is believed that disease is a result of blocked or unbalanced energy in these channels, the pressure applied in the massage helps to release it. Shiatsu massages are effective in treating many conditions particularly repsiratory, digestive problems as well as headaches.

After the massage with the stones is completed, the treatment continues with a normal massage with Swedish techniques. When this is completed, the hot stones may then be placed in key points on the body and left for a short period of time. Depending on the length of the massage this can be repeated on the front section of the body. The massage is effective for back pain, poor circulation, stress relief and tension.

Hungary has long traditions for treating muscle and joint related problems. The treatment has for centuries been based on traditional physiotherapy as massage and physical activity combined with the warm thermal water and mudpackings (balneotherapy). The treatment has therefore been given at the the spas which have their own thermal baths. Access to spas have given the Hungarians special experience in treating such painconditions by being able to combine balneotherapy with other types of physiotherapy. Budapest is today one of the largest international centers for physiotherapy with balneology and hydrology. The traditional methods are now combined with the most modern forms of physiotherapy. The treatment is effective for conditions causing pain from muscles, joints and the back, and the results are especially good for the conditions described below as indications. The treatment is given daily over a period of 2-3 weeks. Such a period is recommended once or twice a year. The treatment periods are essential to give thorough and relaxing treatment over enough time to enable muscles and joints to loosen up. The effect of the treatment usually lasts for several months and generally reduces pain and improves mobility. The use of painkillers can often be reduced and are in some cases not necessary anymore.

    Stay and treatment

Sterk Helse organizes therapeutic holidays of two to three weeks duration to the Budapest Clinic every spring and fall. Stays of three weeks duration have shown to give the best therapeutic effect. We therefore recommend three weeks stay for those having the opportunity for this. The treatment is given at the medical center of the hotel which has modern facilities for physiotherapy and spa. Our therapeutic team gives interdisciplinary, holistic and individual treatment focusing on physical and mental well-being. On the first day everybody will have an appointment with the Hungarian doctor, who is a rheumatologist, to plan the treatment. The doctor is fluent in both english and german. Usually three treatments are given per day, in the morning and early afternoon on weekdays. All the guests will receive follow-ups during the treatment and will also get a final appointment with the doctor in the end of the stay. Lectures with information about the treatment and topics related to healthy lifestyle will also be given as part of the program. The culture program and the treamtment are carefully adjusted to each other and give enough room for rest and private time.

    Treatment overview

The physiotherapy given as part of our program is based on different methods of treatment. The treatment combines these different methods to ensure the best possible effect.

      Mud Pack

The hotel uses mud coming from the famous Héviz Thermal Lake. Saturation of this mud in the thermal waters creates a unique compound inhabited by healing bacteria and sulfur that causes many chemical and biological reactions. Firstly it has excellent heat - conducting features, cooling down four times slower than water and secondly when the sulfur and minerals are absorbed through the skin, to the ligaments, cartilages and sinews it inhibits the degradation of elastine and collagen. The mud is applied either by pump or hand onto the body in a 5 cm layer, with exception to the head and frontal parts of the chest and neck. Its temperature is normally between 40 - 45 degrees Celsius. The body is then wrapped up in blankets. After 20 minutes, the mud is hosed off. The mud pack results in a reduction of local swellings around the joints, a reduction of muscle tension and better nutrition of the cartilage, connective tissue and spinal discs. It also strengthens anti - inflammatory activity and immune processes within the body. The mud can also be applied partially to one part of the body only.

    • » Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy involves the use of water for soothing pains and treating diseases. Its use has been recorded in ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman civilizations. Egyptian royalty bathed with essential oils and flowers, while Romans had communal public baths for their citizens. Hippocrates prescribed bathing in spring water for sickness. A Dominican monk, Sebastian Kneipp, again revived it during the 19th century. The use of water to treat rheumatic diseases has a long history. Today, hydrotherapy is used to treat musculoskeletal disorders such as arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, or spinal cord injuries and in patients suffering burns, spasticity, stroke or paralysis. The treatments use physical water properties, such as temperature and pressure, for therapeutic purposes, to stimulate blood circulation and treat the symptoms of certain diseases.

      Carbon Dioxide Bath

The carbon dioxide bath is an individual bath of normal water at temperature between 32 - 34 degrees Celsius into which is pumped small bubbles of carbon dioxide gas. The same carbon dioxide used in the food industry is pumped into the water through a tube. The treatment can last from between 10 - 20 minutes during which you will lie relaxing as small carbon bubbles caress and coat your skin as the gas is absorbed into the body. Medically the carbon dioxide strongly congests the skin, thereby slowing down the heart activity, reducing blood pressure and stress on the heart and improving the blood circulation. This treatment is ideal for general relaxation as there is a pleasant soothing feeling of the general tickling from the carbon bubbles.

      Underwater Traction

Traction therapy is a passive procedure that uses mechanical force to induce stretching of the soft tissues (muscles, ligaments, sinews, joint capsule), the pulling force during the traction being constant and continuous. Traction in water uses the weight of the body which is suspended by the neck or below the arms in a special pool of warm water. sometimes additional weights are added to the waist or feet to increase the stretching effect. During threatment the body is gently stretched out releasing the muscles and stiff spinal connective tissuesl. The treatment is supervised by a professional therapist and lasts for about 15 minutes.

This includes providing services in circumstances where movement and function are threatened by aging, injury, disease or environmental factors.

      Group Therapeutic Exercise

Therapeutic exercise is a crucial part of the recovery process and instrumental to any rehabilitation program. This therapy is lead by an expert physiotherapist, normally for a group of guests with a similar diagnostic profile. An example of our classes includes therapeutic exercise for spine or joint conditions, obesity and for cardiac patients. The therapy uses exercises designed to relax overloaded muscles, strengthen weak muscle groups, improve mobility of the joints and pelvis and strengthen static/dynamic functions necessary for correct body positioning. An inseparable part of these classes are breathing exercises in addition to training for speed, agility, balance, strength and overall fitness.

      Time: 20 minutes

      Full body/Partial Medical Massage

Performed by qualified masseurs, the medical massage, sometimes referred to as the «classical» massage, uses a variety of techniques during the treatment. The massage generally targets areas where secondary changes have occurred as a result of a reaction to injury somewere in the body. Its aim is to speed up the recovery process by improving circulation to the problematic areas. As well as improving blood flow to the targeted region, it can relax or stimulate muscles and mitigate pain. the masssage is normally conducted in the following areas: back, arms, lower extremities, stomach, chest and neck. Depending on which areas are targeted this is either referred to as «partial» or «full body» massage.

This is a specialized massage which aims to assist the lymphatic system, particularly in cases where there is or has been a malfuntion. The massage involves light rhythmical movements of the hand that is applied to the lymph nodes and the lymphatic system. It is this action that stimulates the lymph node activity to cleanse the body and helps the flow of lymphatic fluid to remove toxins, debris, cellwaste and dead particles. The massage is usually divided into extremities of the body, each extremity generally taking half an hour to massage.

      Time: 20 - 50 minutes per extremity
      Doctors prescription required: No
      Benefits: Therapeutic

      Ultrasound Therapy

Ultrasound uses sound of high frequency and intensity which is converted to mechanical and heat energy. 30% of this mechanical energy results in a type of micro - massage in the tissues of the body that are targeted, resulting in heat. The treatment is administered by placing the head of the device in continuous or pulse application to the skin that has been given a coating of paraffin oil or conductive gel. The depth of impact varies between 2 - 6 cm and the effect stimulates the molecules causing subsequent chemical reactions. It also improves blood circulation as well as nutrition of the tissues with an analgesic and antispastic effect. The site of application needs to be prescribed by a doctor, but it is generally an area that is in pain or in need of relief.

    • » Electrotherapy

Electrotherapy is a medical treatment using electric currents passed through the body to stimulate nerves and muscles. The treatment act to speed wound healing, reduce pain and improve blood circulation and mobility.

TENS - Transcutaneous Electric Neuro Stimulation

This uses the principle that pain and pain impulses in the body can be dispersed through stimulation of the nervous system by an electrical current. This electrical current is either applied in impulses in short bursts, in waves or in a continuous stream. A pad is placed upon the site of the problematic area and the current passes through the skin to the nerve. This treatment is especially effective for conditions that require the reduction of pain particularly in the back or neck, specific examples include spine diseases, headaches and post - traumatic pain.

      Time: 15-30 minutes
      Doctors prescription required: Yes
      Benefits: Therapeutic

      Interference

In this treatment different electrical pads are placed onto the body in conjunction with a small vacuum. The effect is one of micro - massage on the damaged tissue. Depending on the pre - set frequency the muscles can be stimulated to a so - called muscle gymnastic condition or alternatively produce relaxation in muscle tone to have an analgesic effect. The treatment has two advantages, firstly it reduces pain and secondly the micro - massage improves the circulation and flow of oxygen to the tissue resulting in a healing effect.

      Time: 15-20 minutes
      Doctors prescription required: Yes
      Benefits: Therapeutic

      Galvanic Bath

Water and gentle electrical current are the components of this treatment that is carried out in a bath at a temperature of 34 degrees Celsius whilst the electricity is passed through the body. The electric current causes a tranquilizing effect in cases of nerve agitation. This makes the treatment suitable for all aching conditions of the motor organs, in particular degenerative, inflammatory arthritis and joint problems. It also has a positive effect on improving the metabolism of the tissues, the shrinking of oedemas and reducing pain and spasticity.

      Time: 15 minutes
      Doctors prescription required: Yes
      Benefits: Therapeutic

      Galvanic four cell bath

This treatment is especially beneficial for rheumatoid arthritis. The forearms and lower limbs are placed into water trays of 34 degrees Celsius. Water and a gentle electrical current are the components of this treatment and the electric current is passed through these particular body parts. Because only the limbs of the body are immersed in water, the electric current in the four - cell bath can be given at a stronger intensity than the full galvanic bath. The treatment also has the benefit of improving the circulation.

      Time: 15 minutes
      Doctors prescription required: Yes
      Benefits: Therapeutic

      Iontophoresis

This is a treatment whereby medicines are absorbed into the body, through the skin by means of an electric galvanic current. This is normally recommended as a treatment in cases of arthritis and chronic inflammatory spinal problems.

      Time: 15 minutes
      Doctors prescription required: Yes
      Benefits: Therapeutic

      Diadynamic Stimulus Current Therapy

This treatment uses a mixture of electric currents (both galvanic and impulse), that have an inhibitory or facilitatory effect depending on the frequency, intensity and other parameters. the result is both pain relif and improvement in circulation. Generally the treatment is prescribed for conditions such as sprains, bruises, oedemas, joint and spine wear and disc degeneration.

      Time: 3-15 minutes
      Doctors prescription required: Yes
      Benefits: Therapeutic

      Selective Stimulus Galvanic Current

Two pads are placed at both ends of the indicated muscle. An electric current is released beween the two pads. As a result it is possible to feel the muscle fibers contracting and relaxing as the treatment is in progress. The purpose of this treatment is to build strength in the muscles following an injury or operation and is an important part of a rehabiltation package.
